HOW CAN YOU BE GREAT
But Jesus called them (his disciples) to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave---just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Mothers always want the best for their children. The mother of James and John, Zebedee’s sons, was no different. She came to Jesus requesting that her sons be allowed to sit at Jesus right and left hand when He came into His kingdom. This made the other disciples very angry. In response to her request and the disciple’s anger our Lord Jesus told His disciples how they could ALL be “great” and “first” in the kingdom of God.
Two things are required for us to be great in the sight of God, not the sight of men. Jesus said, “Whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.” The first thing is that we must be willing to be the servant of God and others. Secondly, if we want to be great Jesus said, “And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave.” To be great one must be willing to be a servant and a slave for others. Does this offend you? If so, then, let me remind you that the Son of God Himself was a servant and a slave to God and for us. “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Let us be reminded that Jesus said, “The servant is not greater than his master.” If our Lord was great by being a servant and a slave, then can we do anything less? Do you want to be great? Surrender to God to be His servant and His slave for His glory. It will cost you much as it cost Christ His own life! Amen!
