“The Missing Lamps” Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” In a certain mountain village in Europe several centuries ago, a certain nobleman wondered what legacy he should leave to his townspeople. At last he decided to build them a church. No one saw the complete plans for the church until it was finished. When the people gathered, they marveled at its beauty and how complete it was. Then someone asked, “But where are the Lamps? How will it be lighted? The nobleman pointed to some brackets in the walls. Then he gave each family a lamp which they were to bring with them each time they came to worship. “Each time you are here the area where you are seated will be lit,” the nobleman said. Each time you are not here, that area will be dark. This is to remind you that when- ever you fail to come to church, some part of God’s house will be dark.” Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “I AM the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” He also said, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a Hill cannot be hidden.” God has called each of us as believers in Christ to be a reflection of His Son Jesus Christ who is the Light of the world. We are to re- flect Jesus as the Moon reflects the Sun. We are to let our light so shine before men, that they may see our good works and glorify our Father who is in heaven. Our lights are not only to be seen in the House of God, the Sanctuary of the Lord, but out in the world where people are walking in darkness and need the “Light” the most. Are we letting our light shine in the house of God and in the world of darkness? |
